چکیده

The appreciation that morphological factors are essential building blocks in anymodel of lexical organisation is nowwidely accepted.Morphological structure is a necessary component in natural languages. It introduces into a language, elements of complexity as well as factors of redundancy. From an historical perspective, the classical models of visual word recognition that were laid out two or three decades ago, regarded lexical processing as an interplay between orthographic, phonological, and semantic information (e.g., Forster, 1976; Morton, 1969; Seidenberg & McClelland, 1989; and see Frost, 1998, for a review). Interestingly, the study of morphology has evolved in parallel to these models with few attempts to generate a general theory of word recognition that takes morphological structure into account. One important motivation for pursuing such a theory stems from the abundant research conducted in different languages. Morphological complexity is created in different languages according to different principles. Thus, our models of representation, storage and processing of words in a language should be tuned to these principles. It is in this perspective that a group of researchers investigating morphological processing were brought together in the summer of 1999 for a workshop in Aix-en-Provence, France. The theme of this workshop was ‘‘Cross-Linguistic Perspectives on Morphological Processing’’. The papers presented in the workshop, which form the basis for the present special issue, brought evidence from Hebrew, French, Italian, Spanish, Catalan, Dutch, German, Finnish, Chinese, and English. A Reexamination of the Cross-linguistic Parameterization of Causative Predicates: Japanese perspectives

1. Introduction In this paper, I will examine the syntax and semantics of one subtype of Japanese morphological causative in comparison to other kinds of morphological causatives in Japanese and similar causatives in other languages. I will point out that this subtype does not exhibit biclausal properties typical of more familiar Japanese causative predicates. The observations are discussed in ...

Linguistic Perspectives on Morphological Processing

2 1. Introduction What's the use of theoretical linguistics for understanding human language processing? Looking at the vast majority of studies on morphological processing, the impression one will get is: not much. For example, casual inspection of the major international journals in experimental psycholinguistics (Cognition, Language and Cognitive Processes, Brain and Language, Journal of Mem...

Language Learning ISSN 0023-8333 Introduction. Beyond the Obvious: Do Second Language Learners Process Inflectional Morphology?

Given that this special issue is devoted to the acquisition and processing of inflectional morphology by second language (L2) learners, the question in the title may appear redundant. However, recent research on first language (L1) and L2 morphological processing has challenged basic assumptions about the status of inflectional morphology in linguistic processing that had long been taken for gr...

Acoustic correlates of linguistic rhythm: Perspectives

The empirical grounding of a typology of languages’ rhythm is again a hot issue. The currently popular approach is based on the durations of vocalic and intervocalic intervals and their variability. Despite some successes, many questions remain. The main findings still need to be generalised to much larger corpora including many more languages. But a straightforward continuation of the current ...
